How You Can Live in the Light of Peace in the Holidays and Every Day

Whatever you celebrate this holiday season, or if you do not celebrate at all, may you live in the light of peace and share it with the world.

This week, fitting for a time of year that is special to so many, we are continuing an important exploration of positive possibilities and impossibilities, the two lenses through which we can see life in any given moment. We now look more closely at what it means to live in positive possibilities. To me, the positive possibilities are as fresh as a new-fallen snow at dawn, as vast as the depths in the eyes of a newborn, as luminous as an endless array of candles, as resonant as any celestial choir. They are the warm and welcoming space in which we find our true home.

When you are in the positive possibilities, you know that you are loved, as a welcomed and integral part of a much greater intelligent whole. You are within the family of life, sharing in the feast of the abundant moment.

It is important to note that positive possibilities are not about wilfully conjuring up a state of mind to overcome a sense of adversity, with the mindset “I am feeling lousy, but I will try to be positive.” That would be like forced festivities that do not make space for more honest feelings. The positive possibilities are about experiencing your very essence as love, beyond any sense of dischord or any notion of sentimental romance or attachment. Love in this context is the expansive, ever-present reality of wisdom-compassion, the energy of life itself. Fully resonant in the positive possibilities, you know in every cell of your being that you are wisely interconnected with all things in a way that the ego cannot grasp. You recognize that to love yourself unconditionally is to love all things equally. In the positive possibilities, you come to understand that the only reality is love, and love is everything. It is a fiercely compassionate continuum that expands through all time and space.

Why Does Suffering Exist?

The ego, which by its divisive nature is an obstacle to peace, may wish to refute the idea of positive possibilities, by pointing to the horrors and atrocities we see in the world and the struggles we each can face. In the positive possibilities, you do not deny that difficulties, or even evil actions, happen. You are present for it all. With deep compassion for yourself and for all beings, you understand that the source of every pain is in one single place: the lack of awareness of this ever-present love, which includes loves for self, other and our world. When you choose to care for yourself and leave an abusive situation, or tend to someone in need beyond your personal comfort, or take kind and benevolent action for our shared planet, you no longer contribute to the distorted perception of lack of love. You become an instrument of presence and peace.

You know you are in the positive possibilities when you feel rooted, vital and expansive; loved and connected; both relaxed and alert; open, ready and willing to live, love and serve. The positive possibilities are the core of inner peace and lasting happiness.

As you move through this holiday week, I invite you to consider the following and see how it shifts your experience:
• Can I think of a time I experienced positive possibilities? What was that like?
• Can I think of a time I tried to force positivity and put on a cheerful face when I felt unhappy? Did that work?
• How can I make greater space in myself to embody the reality of positive possibilities?
• What can I do this week to make positive possibilities a priority?

From my heart to yours,
Parvati
